Binge drinking among men is a growing concern.  Binge drinking is defined for men as 5 or more drinks in a 2 hour time period.  Men average about 12.5 binge drinking episodes per year.  Why is that a bad thing?  Let's explore the consequences of binge drinking:

  • Unintentional injuries
  • Alcohol poisoning (more on this below)
  • Sexual dysfunction in men (more on this below)
  • Binge drinkers are 14 times more likely to report driving while impaired than non-binge drinkers

Alcohol Poisoning

Alcohol poisoning occurs when more alcohol is ingested than the body can process.  Your body can process one standard drink an hour and when we drink more than that, it begins to cause more problems.  Alcohol poisoning can cause death when it begins to stop a persons vital life functions including breathing, kidney function and liver function.  The problem is that someone who has alcohol poisoning appears to have passed out and many people think they are just going to sleep it off.  Know the signs of alcohol poisoning and get help if needed:

Sexual Performance

William Shakespeare said of alcohol:

“it provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance”

Macbeth, Act 2 Scene 3

While alcohol may make a person more willing to interact with others and engage in risky behaviors, it can also create some problems with performing those behaviors.  Because alcohol interferes with blood pressure and because men need appropriate blood pressure to gain and maintain an erection, alcohol can cause problems with performance.  But don't think that this is just a problem with men...women become dehydrated and lubrication is needed for sexual experience as well.
